A GIFT AND A GESTURE OF GLOBAL SOLIDARITY

Handshouse Studio is leading a project to explore the history and cultural heritage embodied in “La Forêt”, the complex system of wooden timbers that once supported the roof of Notre-Dame de Paris before they were all tragically burned in 2019.

In 2021, Handshouse Studio organized a team of traditional carpenters, architects and students from across the US to build an accurate full-scale reconstruction Truss #6--one of the oldest trusses that once held the roof above the sacred spaces of Notre-Dame cathedral, using the tools, methods, and materials that would have been available to the original makers.

The Notre-Dame de Paris Truss Project is a hands-on educational endeavor to reawaken awareness of the history of this lost historic object and the story of the craftspeople who made it. We believe collaboration is intrinsic to the effort to revive this iconic edifice and acknowledges the impact of this loss of cultural heritage to people around the world. Our effort is intended as a statement of solidarity with our fellow traditional crafts people and an act of goodwill among neighbors.

We wish to share our truss reconstruction as a “gift” to France and the collective effort to rebuild Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral.
