Animals & Architecture Project

The project Animals & Architecture and Attitude is an architecture course at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, in collaboration with Handshouse Studio, to design and construct a multi-purpose covered stage for the Children’s Zoo at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston.

This community service project begins with a one semester design course, followed by a spring building workshop in which students design and construct an object that has a real world client with a need. This course is presented to students with an emphasis on developing skills in research, analysis, design development, and critique with juried selection. The final result is the creation of a useful space and structure where humans and animals interface and learn from each other with a covered stage for presentations, educational programming, concerts, and performances located at the Franklin Park Zoo.
